Overview

A buzzing international metropolis home to seventeen million people (and counting), sprawling Delhi is the capital of India, and also functions as the prime hub of wider South Asia.

While this may conjure visions of urban chaos, and while those visions may be almost precisely accurate in teeming Paharganj and other older districts, much of the city is low-lying and surprisingly green, as best witnessed from the elevated sections of the excellent metro system. Delhi boasts a rich and varied history, and you’ll come across tombs, temples and ruins dating back centuries.

On the flip side of the coin, a burgeoning youth scene is exemplified by designer bars, chic cafés and decent clubs. The result is a city full of fascinating nooks and crannies that you could happily spend weeks exploring.
From a tourist’s perspective, Delhi is divided into two main parts. Old Delhi is the city of the Mughals and dates to the seventeenth century. It’s the capital’s most frenetic quarter, and its most Islamic, a reminder that for more than seven hundred years Delhi was a Muslim-ruled city.

Old Delhi’s greatest monuments are the magnificent constructions of the Mughals, most notably the mighty Red Fort, and the Jama Masjid, India’s largest and most impressive mosque. To the south, encompassing the modern city centre, is New Delhi, built by the British to be the capital of their empire’s key possession.

A spacious city of tree-lined boulevards, New Delhi is also impressive in its own way. The Rajpath, stretching from India Gate to the Presidential Palace, is at least as mighty a statement of imperial power as the Red Fort, and it’s among the broad avenues of New Delhi that you’ll find most of the city’s museums and its prime shopping area.

The splendour of Agra – India’s capital under the Mughals – remains undiminished, from the massive fort to the magnificent Taj Mahal. Along with Delhi, 204km northwest, and Jaipur in Rajasthan, Agra is the third apex of the “Golden Triangle”, India’s most popular tourist itinerary. Although it’s possible to see Agra on a daytrip from Delhi, the Taj alone deserves so much more – a fleeting visit would miss the subtleties of its many moods, as the light changes from sunrise to sunset – while the city’s other sights and Fatehpur Sikri can easily fill several days.

Most of the city’s major Mughal monuments, including the Taj Mahal, are lined up along the banks of the Yamuna River, which bounds the city’s eastern edge. They date from the later phase of Mughal rule and the reigns of Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan – exemplifying the ever-increasing extravagance which, by Shah Jahan’s time, had already begun to strain the imperial coffers and sow the seeds of political and military decline.

Sawai Madhopur is a city located in the state of Rajasthan. The city has a rich history and cultural heritage, and it is known for its stunning architecture and monuments. The old city of Sawai Madhopur is located near the Ranthambore National Park, which is a popular tourist destination known for its tiger population. The old city has narrow streets and alleys lined with traditional Rajasthani houses, many of which are painted in bright colours.

One of the main attractions in the old city is the Ranthambore Fort, which dates to the 10th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort was built by the Chauhan dynasty and later occupied by various rulers, including the Mughals and the British. Another popular attraction in the old city is the Trinetra Ganesh Temple, which is located within the Ranthambore Fort. This temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, and it is said that the idol here has three eyes, which is a unique feature.

In nutshell, Sawai Madhopur's old city is a fascinating place to explore and a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Rajasthan's rich history and culture. The old city of Sawai Madhopur in Ranthambore is a popular tourist destination known for its tiger population. The old city has narrow streets and alleys lined with traditional Rajasthani houses, many of which are painted in bright colours.

Ranthambore National Park is one of the biggest and most renowned national parks in Northern India. The park is in the Sawai Madhopur district of southeastern Rajasthan, which is about 130 km from Jaipur.

Once considered as one of the famous and former hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Jaipur, today the Ranthambore National Park terrain is a major wildlife tourist attraction that has drawn the attention of many wildlife photographers and lovers.

The enthralling exploration of Ranthambore National Park is an experience to remember forever. Sighting the tigers in this popular national park of India is without any doubt is the top activity. Amongst other things to do in Ranthambore National Park are jeep safari and canter safari that promise the best wildlife sighting experience.

Hiking up to the 10th Century UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ranthambore Fort is a unique experience to have in the wildlife reserve. While birding along the lakes of Ranthambore is yet another enjoyable activity to indulge in. Photography is another top activity in Ranthambore that boasts great opportunities for tiger photography, bird photography and landscape photography.

Planned by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, Jaipur holds the distinction of being the first planned city of India. Renowned globally for its coloured gems, the capital city of Rajasthan combines the allure of its ancient history with all the advantages of a metropolis. The bustling modern city is one of the three corners of the golden triangle that includes Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.

The story goes that in 1876, the Prince of Wales visited India on a tour. Since the colour pink was symbolic of hospitality, Maharaja Ram Singh of Jaipur painted the entire city pink. The pink that colours the city makes for a marvellous spectacle to behold. Jaipur rises up majestically against the backdrop of the forts Nahargarh, Jaigarh and Garh Ganesh Temple.

Jaipur traces back its origins to 1727 when it was established by Jai Singh II, the Raja of Amber. He shifted his capital from Amber to the new city because of the rapidly growing population and an increasing water scarcity. Noted architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya used the established principles of Vastu Shastra to build the city.

Jawai Bandh is a stunning natural wonder located in the Pali district of Rajasthan, India. It is a popular tourist destination known for its unique natural beauty and rich biodiversity. Jawai Bandh is situated on the Jawai River, which flows from the Aravalli Hills and merges with the Mahi River.

Jawai Dam is the main attraction of Jawai Bandh and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The dam was built in the 20th century and is now a popular spot for boating and birdwatching.

The surrounding hills and forests are home to over 200 species of birds, including the endangered, white-bellied sea eagle, grey-headed fish eagle, and painted stork. Visitors can take guided birdwatching tours to spot these majestic creatures.

The area is also home to several ancient temples and shrines, including the famous Jain temple dedicated to Lord Mahaveer. The temple complex features intricate carvings and beautiful marble work.

The surrounding hills are dotted with ancient ruins, adding to the area’s cultural significance. Visitors can take jeep safaris to explore the nearby forests and hills, where they may spot leopards, wolves, hyenas, and other predators.

Jodhpur, the second largest city in Rajasthan is popularly known as the Blue City. The name is clearly befitting as most of the architecture – forts, palaces, temples, havelis and even houses are built in vivid shades of blue. The strapping forts that tower this magnificent city sum up to a spectacle you would not want to miss. The mammoth, imposing fortress of Mehrangarh has a landscape dominating a rocky ridge with the eight gates leading out of the fortress. The new city is located outside the structure. Jodhpur is also known for the rare breed of horses known as Marwari or Malani, which are only found here.

Jodhpur marks its origin back to the year of 1459 AD. The history of this prosperous city revolves around the Rathore clan. Rao Jodha, the chief of Rathore Clan is credited with the origin of Jodhpur in India. The city is known to be built in place of the ancient capital, Mandore of the state of Manwar. Hence, the people of Jodhpur and surrounding areas are commonly known as Marwaris. Also, it is believed that the relics of Mandore can still be witnessed in the Mandore Gardens.

Morning – Guided sightseeing of Old Delhi

Set out on a day of private sightseeing to explore magnificent Mughal architecture and discover the sights and sounds of this vibrant city. Delhi, the capital of India, is the essence of modern India with its many contrasts between the old and new. Starting in Old Delhi, visit the impressive Jama Masjid before taking a rickshaw ride through the narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk.

Jama Masjid…

This great mosque of Old Delhi is the largest in India, with a courtyard capable of holding 25,000 devotees. It was begun in 1644 and the final architectural extravagance of Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor who built the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort.

The highly decorative mosque has three great gates, four towers and two 40 m-high minarets constructed of strips of red sandstone and white marble. Travellers can hire robes at the northern gate. This may be the only time you get to dress like a local without feeling like an outsider so make the most of it.

Chandni Chowk…

One of the oldest and busiest markets of Delhi was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century. It was one of the most important streets in the historical city of Shahjahanabad. The market has been redeveloped to revive its faded glory with world-class infrastructure, fully pedestrianised streets and non-motorised transport lanes.

It is one of the few places in the capital that is not just a shopper's paradise but also a street food lover's haven. Most of the eateries in this marketplace have attained a legendary status and are well-known for some of the best North Indian and Mughlai delicacies.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the crowded marketplace, there are innumerable shops at the iconic 'Parathe Wali Gali' that serve rich stuffed parathas with tangy pickles and sweet tamarind dips. To satiate your snack cravings, visit 'Nai Sadak', and enjoy the tempting Kachoris, Chhole Bhature and Aloo Tikkis.

Lunch at a local restaurant before continuing your sightseeing in New Delhi.

Afternoon – Guided sightseeing of New Delhi

After lunch, continue to New Delhi, built by the colonial British, past the Parliament Buildings, India Gate, Humayun’s Tomb and Birla House.

India Gate…

At the centre of New Delhi stands the 42 m high India Gate, an "Arc-de-Triomphe" like archway in the middle of a crossroad. Similar to its French counterpart, it commemorates the 70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British Army during World War I, and bears the names of more than 13,516 British and Indian soldiers killed in the Northwestern Frontier in the Afghan war of 1919.

The foundation stone of India Gate was laid by His Royal Highness, the Duke of Connaught in 1921 and was designed by Edwin Lutyens. The monument was dedicated to the nation 10 years later by the then Viceroy, Lord Irwin. Another memorial, Amar Jawan Jyoti was added later, after India got its independence. The eternal flame burns day and night under the arch to remind the nation of soldiers who laid down their lives in the Indo-Pakistan War of December 1971.

Humayun’s Tomb…

Humayun’s tomb is sublimely well proportioned, seeming to float above its symmetrical gardens. It's thought to have inspired the Taj Mahal, which it predates by 60 years. Constructed for the Mughal emperor in the mid-16th century by Haji Begum, Humayun's Persian-born wife, the tomb marries Persian and Mughal elements. The arched facade is inlaid with bands of white marble and red sandstone, and the building follows strict rules of Islamic geometry, with an emphasis on the number eight.

The surrounding gardens contain the tombs of the emperor’s favourite barber – an entrusted position given the proximity of the razor to the imperial throat – and Haji Begum. This was where the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, took refuge before being captured and exiled by the British in 1857.

To the right as you enter the complex, Isa Khan’s tomb is an example of Lodi-era architecture, constructed in the 16th century. South is the monumental Khan-i-Khanan’s tomb, plundered in Mughal times to build Safdarjang’s tomb.

Evening – at leisure

After a long and adventurous day, this evening is at your leisure.

Overnight:         The Claridges, Delhi (Heritage Balcony Room)

Buffet breakfast to be served at the hotel.

Morning – depart via road to Agra (duration: approx. 6hrs)

Begin your journey via road to Agra, approximately a six-hour journey, with several stops en-route.

Agra Fort…

Just a kilometre upstream from the Taj Mahal, the 16th century Mughal fort rises magnificently from the banks of the Yamura River. Built entirely of red sandstone in 1565 by Emperor Akbar, this was the imperial city of the Mughal rules when Agra was their capital. It was originally constructed as a military fort, surrounded by two kilometres of impenetrable double walls – within you’ll be able to explore exquisite palaces, spacious audience halls and intricate mosques, set amongst lush, landscaped gardens.

Mehtab Bagh…

This park, originally built by Emperor Babur as the last in a series of 11 parks on the Yamuna’s east bank (long before the Taj was conceived), fell into disrepair until it was little more than a huge mound of sand. To protect the Taj from the erosive effects of the sand blown across the river, the park was reconstructed and is now one the best places from which to view the great mausoleum. The gardens in the Taj are perfectly aligned with the ones here, and the view of the Taj from the fountain directly in front of the entrance gate is a classic. It's a popular spot at sunset.

Arriving at your hotel, check-in and freshen-up.

Afternoon – Agra Fort, Mehtab Bagh, Charbagh Complex and Taj Mahal

Enjoy an afternoon visit to the red sandstone Agra Fort, where Shah Jahan spent years of confinement at the hands of his son Aurangzeb. Continue to Mehtab Bagh, the Charbagh complex across the Yamuna River to the Taj Mahal from where you get a breathtaking view.

Evening – at leisure

After a long and adventurous day, this evening is at your leisure.

Overnight:         Tajview – IHCL SeleQtions, Agra (Executive Room)

Early Morning – view the Taj Mahal at Sunrise

A very early start to view the Taj Mahal at sunrise. Considered the finest example of Mughal architecture the white marble declaration of love was built by Shah Jahan in 1560 in loving memory of Queen Mumtaz Mahal.

Taj Mahal…

The Taj Mahal is widely considered one of the most beautiful buildings ever created. The exquisite marble structure in Agra, India, is a mausoleum, an enduring monument to the love of a husband for his favourite wife. It's also an eternal testament to the artistic and scientific accomplishments of a wealthy empire.

Shah Jahan, “the King of the World,” took control of the Mughal Empire throne in 1628 very much in love with the queen he dubbed Mumtaz Mahal or “Chosen One of the Palace.” The poets at Agra’s Mughal court said her beauty was such that the moon hid its face in shame before her.

The Mughals were at the peak of power and wealth during Shah Jahan’s reign, India’s rich lode of precious gems yielded him much wealth and power. But he was powerless to stop Mumtaz Mahal’s death during childbirth in 1631. Legend has it that she bound him with a deathbed promise to build her the most beautiful tomb ever known.

Morning – depart via road for Sawai Madhopur (duration: approx. 6hrs)

Following our early visit, return to your hotel for a hot buffet breakfast. Check-out, travel via road to Sawai Madhopur…approximately 6 hours with stops en-route.

Fatehpir Sikri…a journey into the regal past

Fatehpur Sikri or the 'City of Victory', is an astounding UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once the bustling capital of the Mughal Empire, boasting stunning architectural brilliance and historical significance.

Stepping foot inside its walls feels like entering an exclusive royal enclave filled with luxurious palaces, serene courtyards and bustling bazaars dedicated to queens. Furthermore, its grand concert hall was where the legendary court musician Tansen performed for the emperor. This grand monument was also believed to have been built after the revered Sufi Saint Sheikh Salim Chishti blessed Emperor Akbar with the gift of bearing sons!

Morning – depart via road to Jaipur (duration: approx. 5hrs)

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before departing for Jaipur, ‘The Pink City’, named for its rose lime wash that covers the city walls, various buildings and temples. Begin your journey via road to Jaipur, approximately a five-hour drive, with several stops en-route.

Jaipur, a bustling modern metropolis, is one of the three points of the Golden Triangle, which comprises Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. It was established in 1727 by Kachhwaha Rajput ruler Jai Singh II, who named it after himself. Jaipur is believed to be India’s first planned city in the Common Era and was developed by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya. Built according to the principles of Vastu Shastra, which divides the city into nine blocks - two for state buildings and palaces and seven for public blocks. The city's fortification walls and gates ensure its security.

As the capital city of Rajasthan, it is known worldwide for its beautiful gems and blends the charm of its ancient heritage with all the benefits of a metropolis. In 1876, to welcome the Prince of Wales, Maharaja Ram Singh of Jaipur had the entire city painted pink, as the colour symbolised hospitality. Today, all buildings in Jaipur are still required to be painted pink. Thus, earning its moniker 'Pink City'.

Hawa Mahal…

Perhaps the most stunning example of Rajasthani heritage from the time of the Royals is the Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds), a wonder that will leave you spellbound with its architectural ingenuity.

Built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, the grandson of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh and designed by Lal Chand Ustad, the iconic Hawa Mahal is a cherished landmark nestled in the heart of Jaipur. It gets its name from an astonishing 953 windows or ‘jharokhas’ cleverly designed to create a honeycombed cooling system that keeps the palace well-aired and cool, even in sun-drenched summers.

This structure is the jewel in Jaipur’s crown that gives it its iconic look. Atop this magnificent mahal rests a pyramidal structure that signifies the crown of Lord Krishna. Owing to this resemblance, it is also fondly called 'the crown of Jaipur.'

A stunning fusion of Islamic and Rajput heritage, the Hawa Mahal's architecture is evident from its lovely pink façade. However, the real delights awaiting you inside will leave you in awe of its breathtaking splendour. So, let's step inside and witness this amazing marvel.

There are no set routes for your Bera leopard safari. One moment you find yourself ‘climbing’ a 25% sheer rocky slope in your 4X4 and the next you are pushing through scrub Acacia trying to get a clear view of a leopard enjoying the warmth of the morning sun with her cubs. Khem Villas is established on land we purchased in 1989. We planted indigenous trees and created small water bodies and have since converted this vast, open grassland into a natural habitat. Today, it is not uncommon to see jackals, jungle cats, hyenas, desert fox, and crocodiles, within the grasslands and around your luxury camp stead. It has also become a bird watcher's paradise.

Our camp in the Ranthambore Tiger reserve is designed to provide peace and tranquillity within its luxurious and very personal atmosphere.

Your cottage is part of a private compound of 1600 square feet. The area includes a spacious and comfortable bedroom, a bath with an open to sky outdoor shower and a large, old-fashioned tub. A private courtyard and veranda look over to the Tiger reserve beyond and runs down to the lake within the premises of Khem Villas

Age Veda Spa at Khem Villas is where you can connect with nature in spirit and body.

The spa provides a meditative silence and is the perfect place for guests to simply enjoy nature. Take walks, go for a run, practice yoga or simply relax in the verandas taking in the sunset and listening to the sounds of the forest.

After a Jungle Safari, the spa is the perfect place for you to relax, rejuvenate and revitalize the body.

Bar…guests have a choice of a variety of alcoholic beverages and cocktails. You can beat the heat of the summer in the air-conditioned comfort of our bar, and in winter there is nothing to beat the campfire and the natural surroundings of Khem Villas.

Camp Fire…every night in winter around the campfire, by the lake, we enjoy the company of our guests. Many like to hear my stories of the jungle and living with the tiger for over 35 years. Plunge Pool filled with fresh water to cool off during the heat of the day awaits the tired self.

Rich Rajputana heritage harmoniously converges with contemporary elegance. With 51 meticulously designed and spacious rooms, each opening onto private courtyards adorned with lush greenery, guests are transported to a realm of opulence and luxury. The palace's exterior is a testament to its reverence for the grandeur of the Amber Fort, proudly showcasing the iconic Golden Gate, an esteemed relic from Rambagh Palace's illustrious past, now gracing the lobby.

The heritage hotel in Jaipur is a tribute to Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II, the palace's former resident, and Spain's first ambassador. His profound influence is tastefully embodied in La Mesa, a Spanish-themed all-day dining experience, and La Terraza, an enchanting al-fresco dining venue.

For those seeking an intimate escape, 1835 beckons – a cocktail lounge steeped in literary history. Here, guests can savour exquisite malts amidst a collection of books dating back over two centuries, providing delightful company for an evening of relaxation and indulgence. At Sawai Man Mahal, guests are invited to explore a world where tradition seamlessly melds with modernity, where the past gracefully merges with the present to create an unforgettable experience.

A major focus remains on the birdlife, farming communities, walks and rewilding. Accompanied by one of our knowledgeable naturalists, explore the farm, local temples and meet the villagers. Take a gentle dawn stroll around the lake, or an evening jeep drive through the grasslands, spying myriad bird species and herds of blue bull. Finish with a surprise sundowner, relax in the lovely tented sitting room and enjoy chatting around a blazing fire under a canopy of stars, before settling into a culinary feast for dinner. The food here is exceptional – we use local, organic home produce as much as possible, with meals made using age-old family recipes, which have received some of the highest praise in Rajasthan.

Luxury tents have always played an important part in Rajput lifestyle. Constant safari campaigns in far-flung lands meant long stays in tents in inhospitable conditions. These tents were the only luxury available and soon these ‘homes away from home’ evolved into mobile, mini palaces. RAAS Chhatrasagar captures this romance.

Each tent is contemporary with soft muted colours, Jodhpur stone, teak furniture and sky lights; understated but chic and fresh. Every space has air-conditioning and heating, so the camp remains open all year round – one of the few tented camps in India to do so.

A new walkway to the tents allows you to sit outside your tent in addition to giving more privacy, whilst retaining the idyllic views. There’s nothing quite like sitting on your veranda, with a good book, sipping a chilled glass of something, and being rewarded with glorious, uninterrupted views and virtually no sign of habitation.

RAAS is Jodhpur’s first boutique hotel with a signature look born from a fusion of modern and ancient styles. The courtyard is a tranquil haven within the hustle and bustle of Jodhpur’s old town.

With a stunning entrance, flanked by a magnificent pool, the hotel comprises four original buildings with three additional contemporary structures. Inspired by the Walled City, the new buildings feature a modern approach to the use of space and light, yet each is grounded in tradition. Intricate architectural carvings adorn the structure in the iconic style of 18th-century havelis. Jodhpur’s red sandstone unites the old and the new with the contemporary designs adding an exciting and fresh dimension to the region’s ancient carving industry.

The hotel has forty rooms and suites, each of which had been constructed to our distinctive design principles. Our signature style balances the historic charm of the original Rajput residence and the sleekness and simplicity of contemporary design. Modern artwork and age-old pink sandstone blend in combination, interspersed with polished black terrazzo and flashes of Jodhpur blue. This magical atmosphere allows guests to enjoy the royal splendour of bygone years, whilst simultaneously being treated to the luxuries of the modern age. Each room boasts ample space and luxury amenities. If you explore our different rooms, you are sure to find the one that suits your tastes.
